A Dedicated Home Practice
Daily sadhana (practice) is part of self-care and aligning with our soul’s deepest desire. It is a commitment to show up. No matter where we are in life, we can tap into that deep well within us of strength and clarity.
Sometimes we feel like being guided through a Yoga practice in a class and sometimes we feel like listening and moving with our own intuition. A home practice gives us the freedom to tailor our practice to our particular needs and goals. The Yogic scriptures suggest using the same place in your home and practicing at the same time each day in order to build up the bhav, feeling or vibration, in that space. The scriptures even suggest wearing the same clothes for practice in order to put our mind in the meditative mood.
A home practice also builds mental fitness and strengthens our will power. When starting a home practice for the first time, begin with a shorter amount of time that you can commit to with confidence, perhaps 10 minutes, then add on from there. A big change for me was sitting for practice each day at the same time regardless of whether “I felt like it”. This is the tapasya. Sitting in the fire of transformation day after day, when there is joy, when there are tears, when there is fullness and when there is emptiness. Through the confusion, and clarity, commit to show up day after day. Persian poet Sanai wrote “lie down before the door you long to go through”. If you want to be stronger, do things that challenge you to build strength. If you want to be more loving, think, speak and do things that cultivate love. Knowing that every day, every practice will be different. Offering it all up on the altar of life.
